The Split Fee Options section of the Split Billing tab allows you to specify how fees are split among matters. Fees can be split after calculating the amount based on the main client's rate, or you can choose to split the hours and calculate the amount based on each split matter's individual rate. Additionally, you can specify whether to split fee credits as well as non-billable and zero amount fees among the matters.

Split both Hours and Amount Select Split both Hours and Amount if you want to split the fee amounts after they have been calculated based on the main client's rate.
Split Hours and then calculate Amount Select Split Hours and then calculate Amount if you want to split the fee amounts before they have been calculated. Each split matter's split fee amounts will be based on their own rate rather than the main client's. The rate for each fee will be determined just as if the fee had been directly entered for the split matter, including a check to determine if the Transaction Date falls after the Effective Date of New Rates.

Note: If the original fee has an amount above $0.00 but no hours assigned, the amount will be split instead.

Split Fee Credits

Select the Split Fee Credits check box if you want to split fee credits among split matters. Clear the Split Fee Credits check box if you want to only apply fee credits to the main client.

Note: When the Split Fee Credits option is enabled, fee credits are treated exactly like standard fees by the Perform Split Billing process. For example, if the fee allocation percentages for a client are greater than 100%, when the credit is split, the total credits will be greater than the original. Similarly, if the Split Hours and then calculate Amount option is enabled and the fee credit is based on the main client's hourly rate, the total credits will be greater than the original if the split matters use a higher rate.

Split Non-Billable and Zero Amount Fees

Select the Split Non-Billable and Zero Amount Fees check box if you want to split non-billable fees and fees with an amount of $0.00 among matters. Clear the Split Non-Billable and Zero Amount Fees check box if you want to only apply these fees to the main client.

Note: When this option is enabled along with the Split Hours and then calculate Amount option, a fee transaction with Hours to Bill, but a rate of 0.00 on the main client will generate a split fee with an amount greater than zero if the split client's rate for that tcode is greater than $0.00.
