There may be instances where you do not know which client or matter a check will apply to. For example, you may receive a check from a client who has 30 different matters and the check does not indicate where to apply the payment, or you may receive a check from a third party and it is unclear where to apply the payment. If the check includes a statement number, the button can be used to select the client and matter based on the statement number.

After clicking the button (or pressing Alt+N) in the Payment entry window, a window will be displayed allowing you to enter a statement number.

The button can be used to open the Statement Number Lookup window that allows you to view a list of statements in statement number order and select any statement by double-clicking it.

Note: If the selected statement number does not have a current balance due (i.e., the statement has a credit balance or payments have paid off the balance since the statement was updated), a message will be displayed indicating either there are no current due amounts for that statement.

Note: The Select by Statement Number option is only available when statements are numbered at the firm level.

Note: If multiple statements have the same statement number, but only one of the statements has a current balance, the statement with a balance will be selected. However, if multiple statements have the same statement number, and more than one of the statements has a current balance, then you must manually select the client.

Note: When the Payment Entry window is opened via the Import Online Payments window, the Select by Statement Number option is disabled.
