Tabs3 Billing supports three types of merchant accounts: Firm, Location, and Timekeeper. While many firms need only a single account for credit card processing, some firms prefer to route their credit card payments to different accounts based on the client’s assigned Location or Primary Timekeeper. Additionally, Tabs3 Billing supports integration with multiple credit card processors (Tabs3 Pay®, LawPay®, and LexCharge®).

Payments and Client Funds

When a credit card payment or client funds deposit is processed, Tabs3 Billing checks the associated client record and uses the following logic to determine which merchant account to use:

  1. Is there a merchant account associated with the client’s Primary Timekeeper?
    1. If yes, use that merchant account.
    2. If no, proceed to step 2.
  2. Is there a merchant account associated with the client’s Location?
    1. If yes, use that merchant account.
    2. If no, use the merchant account assigned to the Firm.

Note: Tabs3 Billing does not need to determine which credit card processor to use in this scenario, as that is based on the payment method you selected when entering the transaction.

Online Payment Links

When generating an online Payment Link for a statement, Tabs3 Billing uses a similar method to determine which merchant account to use, but may also need to determine which credit card processor to use (if more than one is enabled and configured for online payment links).

Note: Tabs3 Pay and LawPay cannot be enabled simultaneously. Enabling one of these payment processors will disable the other.

  1. Is there a merchant account associated with the client’s Primary Timekeeper?
    1. If yes, is there a Tabs3 Pay or LawPay account, a LexCharge account, or both?
      • Tabs3 Pay or LawPay - Use the Tabs3 Pay or LawPay account.
      • LexCharge - Use the LexCharge account.
      • Both - Use the Tabs3 Pay or LawPay account.
    2. If no, proceed to step 2.
  2. Is there a merchant account associated with the client’s Location?
    2. If no, proceed to step 3.
  3. Use the merchant account assigned to the Firm. If both Tabs3 Pay or LawPay and LexCharge are enabled and configured for online payment links, use the Tabs3 Pay or LawPay account. If neither is enabled, do not generate a payment link.
