Key Type

The Key Type determines the format of your client numbering system and is defined in Tabs3 Customization. All Client IDs can have a maximum of 12 characters including an optional decimal point. Typically, the portion of the Client ID to the left of the decimal represents the client and the portion of the Client ID to the right of the decimal represents an individual matter for the client. The 12-character limit for Client IDs includes the portion on the left side of the decimal, the portion on the right side of the decimal, and the decimal itself.

There are three varieties of Key Types. The Numeric Key Type allows only numbers to be used in the Client ID. The Alpha Key Type allows both numbers and letters to be used in the Client ID. The Mixed Key Type allows numbers and letters to be used to the left of the decimal (the client portion of the Client ID) but only numbers to the right of the decimal (the matter portion of the Client ID). For Numeric and Mixed Key Types, the Decimal Places defined in Tabs3 Customization indicates the number of digits allowed to the right of the decimal.

Once the Key Type has been defined in Tabs3 Customization, it can only be changed using the Change Key Type program.

Note: When using a Mixed or Alpha Key Type, only the letters A-Z and numbers 0-9 can be used in the client ID. Special characters are not allowed. Client IDs are case insensitive; for example, client SMITH.001 is the same as client Smith.001.
