The Task Code ID is used during data entry for task based billing clients and consists of four or five characters. The first one or two characters are always letters and determine whether the code is a Phase/Task code, Activity code or Expense code. The remaining three characters are digits and are used to designate the individual phase/task, activity or expense.

Note: Some Task Code sets will use a letter and three numeric digits instead of the format with two letters and three numeric digits.

The button can be used to open the Task Code Lookup window that allows you to view a list of task codes and select any task code by double-clicking it.

Phase/Task Codes

A Phase/Task code is specified for each fee and cost transaction. This code designates which phase or task the individual activity or expense applies to. Phase/Task codes are designated by the letter(s) of the task code set in the first one or two character positions of the Task Code ID. Individual Phase/Task codes are then assigned a unique three-digit number (000-999) following the letters of the task code set. Examples of Phase/Task codes include:

B100 - Administration

B110 - Case Administration

B120 - Asset Analysis and Recovery

C100 - Fact Gathering

C200 - Researching Law

PA200 - Patent Investigation and Analysis

Activity Codes

An Activity code is specified for each fee transaction and describes how work within a phase or task is performed. Activity codes are designated by an "A" in the first character position of the Task Code ID. Individual Activity codes are then assigned a unique three-digit number (000-999) following the letter "A". Examples of Activity codes include:

A101 - Plan and prepare
A102 - Research
A103 - Draft/revise

Note: The same Activity codes are used for all task code sets.

Expense Codes

An Expense code is specified for each cost transaction and describes the specific type of cost. Expense codes are designated by an "X" or an "E" in the first character position of the Task Code ID. Individual Expense codes are then assigned a unique three-digit number (000-999) following the letter "X" or "E". Examples of Expense codes include:

X105 - Word Processing

X116 - Meals

X122 - Late Fees

E101 - Copying
