This program is designed to test for basic network reliability (i.e., reading and writing across the network) as well as provide a basic idea of read/write speed. It is recommended that the Network Test be run if the firm experiences network-related issues to help determine whether a hardware issue exists.

Note: This test will help determine your network's reliability. However, this is not a conclusive test and other tests may need to be run by your network technician.

The Network Test has the following fields:

Status The Status group displays the current activity of the Network Test.
Participants This field displays the number of workstations currently running the Network Test. It will default to "0" when no Network Test is currently running.
Cycles This field displays the number of cycles that have been completed throughout the course of the current test. It will default to "N/A" when no Network Test is currently running.
Start Time This field displays the date and time at which the current test was started. It will default to "N/A" when no Network Test is currently running.
Elapsed Time This field displays how long the current test has been running as hh:mm:ss. It will default to "N/A" when no Network Test is currently running.
Parameters Type of IO

This field determines which Input/Output type will be used to perform the network test.

A type of Data & Index tests normal Tabs3 Software network activity (i.e., copying data and updating indexes).

A type of Index Only tests index usage for features such as the Conflict of Interest and journal attachment storage.

A type of Low Level tests Windows network file usage (reads, writes, locks).

Number of Records

This field determines the number of records that will be used to perform the network test.

A smaller number of records will increase the stress on the locking capability of the network.

A larger number of records will decrease the stress on the locking capability.

The default number of records is 256.

Record Size

This field determines the size of the records that will be used to perform the network test.

A smaller record size will provide a smaller load on the network.

A larger record size will provide a greater load on the network.

The default record size is 128KB.

Note: When the Type of IO is set to Index Only, the record size will be shown in bytes rather than KB and will be limited to a range of 5 - 1020 bytes.

File Size

This field displays the approximate size of the data files that will be created for use by the Network Test.

The size is determined by multiplying the Number of Records by the Record Size.

Force disk writes (use only when directed)

The Force disk writes check box, when selected, will write all records through to disk. This will place a heavier load on the disk, which may prove useful in some troubleshooting scenarios. Keep in mind that the increased writes to disk will significantly affect performance; therefore, this option should not be selected except under the direction of Tabs3 Support.

Note: In the Platinum edition of Tabs3 Software, transaction processing is enabled when the Force disk writes check box is selected.

  Add records while running

The Add records while running check box, when selected, causes the network test to increment the Number of Records while the test is running. New records will be added at one of the following rates:

  • If the Type of IO is set to Data & Index or Low Level, then 1MB of records will be added every 15 minutes.
  • If the Type of IO is set to Index Only, then 1KB of records will be added every 15 seconds.

Note: Parameters can only be set by the first participant and cannot be changed after the test is started.

Performance Current The Current performance numbers show the average performance for the most recent 100 records in each column.
Average The Average performance numbers show the performance of the network over the entire length of the test in each column.
Errors The Errors group displays the number of unique errors that have occurred on the current workstation, along with Details regarding the error(s) encountered during the Network Test.

The Start button begins or joins a currently running test. It is disabled after beginning or joining a test. The first workstation on which the Network Test is started will determine the Parameters for the test. Subsequent workstations attempting to join the test will see the Parameter fields disabled.

The Stop button exits or ends a currently running test. It is disabled when a test is not currently running.

The Close button exits or ends a currently running test and closes the Network Test window.

Note: At minimum, two workstations must select to start the Network Test before the test will begin. The test will more accurately assess your network as more computers join the test. Starting the Network Test will generate a significant amount of network traffic; therefore, we do not recommend running this test during peak working hours of the day.
