Most Tabs3 Billing reports can be assigned two separate default report definitions:

A firm-wide report definition for use via the Home Page, Quick Launch or menu bar; and

One for use via the Matter Manager.

Firm-Wide Report Definition

When a report definition is saved via the Save Report Definition window, the Make this definition the default check box indicates whether the definition will be the firm-wide default report definition. Each report type has only one firm-wide report definition. The report definition that was saved last with its Make this definition the default check box selected is the default report definition used when selecting the report via the Home Page, Quick Launch, or menu bar.

Matter Manager Default Report Definition

Each report program can have its own unique default report definition for the Matter Manager. If defined, it must be saved with a required name for that report. The required names are shown in the Matter Manager Customize Reports window. These names start with an underscore character.

To save a Default Report Definition for the Matter Manager

  1. Click on the toolbar to open the Matter Manager window.
  2. From the Reports pane, click the button. If the Reports pane is not currently displayed, click the button.
  3. Highlight the report you want to modify and click the Report Definition button.
  4. Select the desired options on all tabs.
  5. Click Save.
  6. The file name will default to the required file name that begins with an underscore. Enter a description if desired and click OK. (Note: If the file name does not begin with an underscore, click here to view a list of the required report definition names.)
  7. Click OK to run the report.
  8. The next time the report is launched from the Matter Manager, the options you saved will be used as the defaults.

What if a Matter Manager Default Report Definition Doesn't Exist?

When a report is launched from the Matter Manager, Tabs3 Billing looks to see if the special default report definition exists (i.e., the report definition that begins with the underscore). If it exists, it uses that report definition. If it doesn't exist, then Tabs3 looks to see if a firm-wide default report definition exists. If it does, it uses all the options in that report definition except for the client range because the client range is changed to use the specified client as the beginning and ending client. If no default report definition exists, then the default options included with the software will be used.
